Well-known TV host, housing expert and philanthropist Mike Holmes will give the opening keynote address at the 2012 World Indigenous Housing Conference. Mike Holmes stars in Holmes on Homes®, the #1 show on HGTV Canada, which is syndicated in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Germany and South Africa. As a professional contractor, Mike Holmes uncovers and fixes sloppy, dangerous renovations in his award-winning television series (makeitright.ca).
In his WIHC keynote address, Mr. Holmes will profile Building Homes and Building Skills—a partnership between the Canadian Assembly of First Nations and the Holmes Group to renovate housing in the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation in Ontario, Canada, and build a sustainable community, based on green practices. “I am proud to be part of one of the most significant community development projects ever undertaken by First Nations in Canada. Together, we will build homes that are more durable and energy efficient to improve overall health benefits for families in the community. This project will build better infrastructure and create opportunities for First Nations to work with industry leaders.”

Challenges & Solutions in Australian Aboriginal Housing, The Honourable Jenny Macklin, MP
The World Café is an integral part of the WIHC. It is a simple, effective, proven format for hosting group dialogue. Through the World Cafés, WIHC 2012 will offer an unprecedented opportunity for Aboriginal housing leaders from around the world to learn from one another. Senior housing bureaucrats from the New Zealand government can discuss common challenges with senior U.S. bureaucrats. Indigenous leaders in Australia can share their solutions with their peers in Canada. These crucial conversations will be focused and facilitated, recorded in a unique graphical format, and shared in a special plenary at the end of the conference. We will seek commonalities across jurisdictions, and our results will be used to influence decision-making at all levels, including internationally.

A panel discussion will feature the leadership of the two organizations. Our goal is for the panel to share stories on similar successes and challenges in NSW and BC, the strength of our partnerships, capacity building, and governance. Our research indicates that politicians and government officials working in Indigenous housing share many of the same challenges and opportunities in these four countries.
AHMA is the first Aboriginal off-reserve housing authority in Canada, setting a benchmark for devolving government responsibilities to Indigenous management.
The Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) is a Legislative authority, established under the Aboriginal Housing Act 1998. The AHO plans, administers and expands the policies, program and asset base for Aboriginal housing in NSW.

“Australia’s Most Important Voice” (Rolling Stone, April 2011)
Born blind, Gurrumul grew up as a member of the Gumatj clan on Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhem Land. His fragile but powerfully emotive voice has affected the public in a way no other artist has done in this country. This unique Aboriginal man sings songs about identity, spirit and connection with the land, its elements and the ancestral beings he is related to. His high tenor voice and aura-like persona creates emotion, compassion and a feeling of peacefulness and longing with audiences in Australia and around the world.
